HIPPY Ottawa (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters)

The core of the HIPPY program is a structured home visit that delivers a curriculum based on the needs of children to become school-ready. Well-trained peer Home Visitors deliver books and high-quality curriculum activities (French and/or English) directly to parents who then work 15 to 20 minutes a day with their own three, four, and five-year-old children.

Based on the Canada Safety Council training course, this program is designed to provide children with the necessary skills and knowledge to be safe, responsible and feel more secure when home alone. This workshop will help children develop important techniques when handling potentially dangerous situations. Topics include: Who’s at the door, answering the phone, feeling scared, establishing a routine, what is an emergency, calling 911, basic first aid and what to do in case of a fire or severe storm. Group activities and role-playing are key components to this workshop. 

 

Street Proofing, 1 hour, 9 to 12 years

This workshop, designed by the Ottawa Safety Council, is geared to help children recognize potentially dangerous situations and develop street-smart personal safety tools. Topics include: Identifying dangerous situations, trusting your instinct, as well as how to make safe choices, keep a safe distance, say NO, attract attention, and identify common lures. The idea of a family password will be introduced, and a family emergency plan worksheet is provided. Through discussions, role playing and other interactive teaching methods children will learn vital skills for keeping safe.

Based on the Canada Safety Council Babysitter Training Course. It is designed to provide current information concerning childcare for young babysitters to use while babysitting and caring for younger siblings. Student Reference Book

This book summarizes the course sessions and provides child care information that will be of value to the graduates during their babysitting years and their adult lives. The illustrated reference book includes group exercises and note taking pages. A summary sheet is included which can be used to collect important information from the employer at the beginning of each babysitting job.

Certification

Each course graduate (passing grade of 75% on the final examination)  is presented with a wall certificate and graduation wallet card. These provide validation that the holder has completed eight hours of training and successfully passed a comprehensive examination on the course material.

Cyber Safe & Bully Proofing

Two hot topics with parents, this workshop is designed to increase safety awareness when children are using the internet, as well as to explore the idea of bullying; what it is and how to prevent it.    “It is estimated that 2 out of 3 households in Canada have a computer and access to cyberspace, and 26% of kids ages 9 to 15 went to meet a friend that they met online without permission of their parents” (source: www.kidproofsafety.com)  This 3-hour workshop, developed by Kidproof Canada www.kidproofsafety.com and facilitated by the Ottawa Safety Council, is interactive and hands-on with role-playing, and group discussion.

Currently offered for ages 8 – 11.

 

Cyber Safe (2 hours) – Covers the topic of internet safety.  Participants will learn:

  • Common definitions they will find on the Internet
  • Types of possible dangers found on the Internet
  • How to identify warning signs and how to safely respond to them
  • Responsibilities for safe surfing
  • Safe practice for chatting and Instant Messaging

 

Bully Proofing (1 hour) – Learn to avoid being bullied and if they are bullied, know how to stop it. Participants will learn how to:

  • Define bullying and cyber-bullying
  • Recognize bullying behavior in different situations
  • React to bullying if they are being bullied
  • Avoid being a target
  • React if they witness a person being bullied
  • Develop empathy and celebrate uniqueness

Tip of the Day
Instead of saying "Don't touch anything!" when taking young children on an outing, say "Look with your eyes" and teach them the One Finger Rule. By touching with one finger, they can satisfy some of their natural curiosity without being able to pick up anything.
